More Than Clean Beauty: The Plant-Forward Philosophy Behind Leaf People

There was no clean beauty playbook when Julie Williams started Leaf People 22 years ago. No online tutorials showed her how to formulate a botanical serum. No social media communities were swapping startup advice. And there was definitely no AI assistant ready to hand her a business plan. Julie built her company the old-fashioned way: education, trial and error, mentors she trusted, feedback straight from customers, and a relationship with the natural world she’s had her whole life.

Julie recently sat down with the founder of The Wild Party Podcast to talk about what it means to build a skincare company from the plant forward, and what she’s learned from staying committed to that philosophy for more than two decades.

  • What is Herbal Skin Care?

In herbal medicine, we believe in using the entire plant, as nature created it, so that all of its components are allowed to work synergistically together. Because we as organisms are so tied to the botanical world, our cells most easily recognize plants in their natural state. The more we leave plants in their whole, unadulterated form, the better our bodies can recognize and absorb their benefits.
