Exfoliation: The Ritual of Renewal

1.     Exfoliate (2–3× Weekly)

Exfoliation is the ritual of renewal—an intentional step that helps clear away the buildup of dead skin cells that can dull the complexion and soften skin’s natural glow. When used thoughtfully, exfoliation supports smoother-looking texture, encourages a more even appearance and allows the rest of your skincare to absorb more effectively.

Most skin types benefit from exfoliating two to three times per week, though frequency should always be guided by how your skin feels. Sensitive or reactive skin may prefer less frequent exfoliation or gentler formulas, while more resilient skin may enjoy a steady rhythm. On exfoliation days, cleansing becomes part of this step—there’s no need to exfoliate and cleanse separately.

Leaf People offers exfoliation rituals designed to meet skin where it is, honoring both ancestral plant wisdom and modern formulation:

 Physical & Dual Exfoliation Ritual

The Golden & Luminous Scrubs and Amber Lactic Acid Mask. Our beautiful scrubs are plant-forward physical exfoliators enhanced with a mild acid component and our Amber Brightening Lactic Acid Mask works primarily with lactic and gluconic acids enhanced with amber gemstone buffing grains. These formulas are designed to be experienced—inviting you to enjoy the texture, warmth, and tactile sensation of exfoliation. Massage gently onto damp skin using slow, circular motions. They work best in the shower, where steam and water help soften skin and allow for an easy, thorough rinse.

🌙 Lactic Acid Exfoliation Ritual

Our lactic acid masks glide on smoothly, creating a refreshing, lightly tingly sensation as the acids, enzymes and herbs begin their work. Apply to clean skin and allow the mask to rest as directed, then rinse thoroughly—either at the sink or in the shower—using a soft washcloth or sponge to gently remove the mask and reveal refreshed, polished-looking skin.

Always listen to your skin. If it feels sensitized or overworked, pause exfoliation and return when skin feels calm and receptive again.

🌘When to Exfoliate

To give skin the optimal opportunity to absorb serums and find its natural glow, exfoliation works best at night. Evening exfoliation supports overnight renewal while reducing potential sensitivity to sun and environmental exposure. Think of it as clearing the day away—so skin can rest, replenish and receive nourishment more deeply.

That said, exfoliation can also be beautifully timed a few hours before an event or earlier in the day to help refresh texture and enhance radiance. When exfoliating in the morning, always follow with sunscreen, especially if spending time outdoors, to help protect freshly exfoliated skin.

OVERNIGHT RENEWAL

For nights when skin is ready for deep restoration, begin with exfoliation to clear the day away and refine the surface. Follow with toner to prep skin and create a fresh, receptive canvas. Complete the ritual with the Radiant Mask, allowing skin to drink in nourishment and hydration overnight.

This sequence—exfoliate, prep, then deeply nourish—supports skin as it rests and renews, helping you wake to a complexion that feels fully restored and naturally luminous.

  • What is Herbal Skin Care?

In herbal medicine, we believe in using the entire plant, as nature created it, so that all of its components are allowed to work synergistically together. Because we as organisms are so tied to the botanical world, our cells most easily recognize plants in their natural state. The more we leave plants in their whole, unadulterated form, the better our bodies can recognize and absorb their benefits.
